The fifth season of AMC's immensely popular The Walking Dead wrapped up in March, with fans now turning their attention towards upcoming spinoff series Fear The Walking Dead. We sat down with executive producer Greg Nicotero to get some exclusive spoilers on the new show
Hands up if you already miss The Walking Dead? Here at melty we're suffering from serious walker withdrawal, but what better way to wait out the next few months than to sit down with executive producer and all-round genius Greg Nicotero? Last week, we already brought you our exclusive interview about what to expect when The Walking Dead Season 6 premieres later this year, but we also had a couple of questions about the show's highly-anticipated spinoff Fear The Walking Dead. The companion series is set to debut on AMC later this summer, but what exactly can we expect from its six-episode first season? We already know that Fear The Walking Dead won't explore the virus' origin story, but Nicotero tells us that fans can still look forward to a little something extra from the L.A. walkers thanks to the Californian sunshine.
Producers have also drawn on current events to help them with the direction of the new series, with Nicotero commenting that Fear The Walking Dead is a "fascinating statement" about society. As already confirmed by Robert Kirkman, the spinoff will mainly focus on family, the first of many deliberate contrasts with the original series. While the survivors of The Walking Dead - a "rag-tag group" in Nicotero's own words - gradually found each other, forming an unbreakable bond in the process - Fear The Walking Dead plans to deal with families in all their fractured glory. Producers are hoping that this will add an emotional dimension lacking in The Walking Dead, and here at melty we can't wait to see how the family dynamic plays out on screen. The 100 star Alycia Debnam-Carey stars alongside Harry Potter alumnus Frank Dillane in the new series, with Cliff Curtis and Kim Dickens rounding out the cast. Will you be watching Fear The Walking Dead when it premieres this summer?
