Grey's Anatomy: Shonda Rhimes and Jessica Capshaw address Sara Ramirez's departure

The news that Sara Ramirez will not return as Callie Torres in Season 13 stunned both fans and those part of the Grey's Anatomy family alike. Find out what showrunner Shonda Rhimes and Jessica Capshaw had to say about it

Season 12 of Grey's Anatomy was a bit of a roller-coaster ride for Dr. Callie Torres. She started dating a new resident named Penny, and was in a good place with her ex Arizona. That is, until Callie decided to follow Penny to New York and take her daughter Sofia with her. This did not sit well with Arizona and a big custody battle ensued. Arizona won and was granted sole custody of Sofia, but Grey's Anatomy Season 12: Episode 24 ended on a happy note with Arizona showing up on Callie's doorstep with their daughter Sofia and two plane tickets to New York. Arizona encouraged Callie to go to New York, promising that they'll find a way to both spend time with Sofia. It seems like this is actually the last we'll be seeing of Callie since shorty after the finale, Sara Ramirez announced that she will not return for Season 13 of Grey's Anatomy. At least they haven't killed Callie off and the door is still open for her to return.

The reason that Callie's send off wasn't as big as the character deserved is because showrunner Shonda Rhimes learned about Ramirez's departure just a few days before it was officially announced. Addressing the news at Vulture Festival, Entertainment Weekly reports that Rhimes stated: "This one was different because it wasn’t a big, planned thing. I had a different plan going, and when Sara came in and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was lucky that we’d shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”

Rhimes had nothing but nice things to say about Ramirez's exit from the long-standing ABC show. “I feel really good about the fact that she said that she wanted to take this break… I love the woman and I want everything for her. It all worked out in that sense, but I don’t like to see anybody go." Rhimes continued: "I find it fascinating that people are shocked that people are exiting. Most shows go for four seasons… we’re heading into Season 13.” As for Ramirez's onscreen ex, Jessica Capshaw tweeted some warm wishes to her costar. It's safe to say that both Sara Ramirez and Callie Torres will be missed. Are you saddened to hear that Callie won't be a part of Season 13?
