Jensen Ackles will not be returning to direct in Supernatural Season 12, citing a need to pace himself while he's working on the show.
While Jensen Ackles will reprise his role as Dean Winchester in Supernatural Season 12, one thing he won't be reprising is his recurring role as a director early on in the season. Ackles has directed five episodes across the past five seasons, but this year he'll be taking a backseat, or rather won't be taking the director's seat at all. Ackles told TVLine: "I just decided to take the first part of the season easy. Twenty-three episodes is a long, long shoot, and I usually would direct the first episode that we would film… so it’s basically like sprinting the first several miles of a marathon, which doesn’t really work if you’re a good runner. You want to pace yourself, so I’m going to pace myself this year.” So while he isn't directing an episode early on in the season, he hasn't entirely ruled out directing an episode later on.
So what can we expect from Supernatural Season 12? Awhile ago we made our pitch for Season 12 starring Charlie Bradbury, though considering Sam and Dean are returning, it's pretty safe to say things won't pan out that way. Jared Padalecki recently dished on Mary Winchester's return in Supernatural Season 12, and something tells us that she'll play a pretty key role in the twelfth season. Will she turn hunter once more and embrace the family business? Or will she try to warn Sam and Dean against continuing on their current path? Heck, we could even be in for a cameo from John Winchester, although we doubt it, considering Jeffery Dean Morgan is currently enjoying his star turn as Negan on The Walking Dead.
